TRANSCRIPT: --- Sep 15 1829 Dear Lucas, A total change has again taken place. Leslie dined with me yesterday - we have agreed on a long Landscape (Evg [t/n: Evening - perhaps referring to Summer Evening] with a fligh [t/n: flight] of Rookes) as a companion to the ''Spring'' and the ''Whitehall'' ''Stairs'' in place of the Castle [t/n: painting of Hadleigh Castle]. Prithee come and see me at 6 the Evg - & take the things away, lest I change again. However I like all the last affair if you do - I will tell you all the reasons for so chan(g)ing. Pray come at 6. Yours truly J.C. Bring something in your hand. I don't care what. a pity the ''Evening'' prints so very bad. / Mr. Lucas --- In his explanation (pages 321-322), R.B. Beckett corroborates the contents of this letter with letters written by Leslie and Lucas. He notes that ''the subject which was to accompany Spring was Autumnal Sunset...but Constable may have changed his mind again before Lucas had time to make a start on it, for the plate was not used till the end of the series.''
