The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 6, page 21), and Beckett p.393. In a note below the transcript, Shirley notes: 'Date. These corrections come late in the progress proofs, and place the letter before 26 Dec 1829.' Beckett considered the letter slightly later, placing it in the period Jan-June 1833. The leaf has been numbered S6, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. There are some pencil inscriptions on the leaf: ''? Dec 1829''. TRANSCRIPT: --- <recto> Dear Lucas, I send the Mill - with a little dark on the sky at the top of the left hand side. Also - I wish the meadows to be toned down a little so that the water beyond where the sail was - should gleen [sic] a little. Also - broaden the light and perhaps heighen it - on the water the the barge heads. When shall I see you as to lane* I wish he had been - /not dead/ - but anything else <verso> Mr Lucas --- *Lane refers to the portrait painter, Samuel Lane, whose portrait Lucas had once engraved.
