For Mr. Lucas
corner of Hermatage Street

Dear Lucas,
I send you the 30 sovereigns - I hope to see you by 5 tomorrow Eveng - I think we must succeed as everybody likes them.
perhaps you will bring a proof or two of the Evening. but it is not materal [t/n: material] we has better keep all our attention to the print.
4 - the Old Sarum is perfect & might be printing to save time the sooner all are done the better.
                                                   Yours truly
                                              John Constable

                                          35 Chal
                                          Jny 19. 1830.

In a footnote (page 23), Shirley identifies 'Evening' as 'Summer Evening'. In his explanation, Beckett notes that the sum of Lucas' work was £71 - this included charges for engraving at 15 guineas per plate, the cost of proofs, and a gratuity to Lucas. Beckett views the 30 sovereigns mentioned in this letter as the advance payment towards work in hand. Further such payments would me made regularly.</value>
