TRANSCRIPT: --- Mr Lucas Dear Lucas, I send the Wood*. I hope you will get on with the press - and that I shall soon see something - I was in hopes of seeing you last week [.] a gentleman spoke to about you engraving a Cuyp for him but I did not send to you - as I found he had been running in and out of Cooks** and tempering about price - & those people one can do no good with. it is however a very fine picture - Let me soon see something of yours Yours truly J.C. - 22 Feby 1830 Charlotte St --- *Shirley identifies 'Wood' as 'Dell in Helmingham Park, Suffolk'. As Beckett (page 324) notes, this was Constable's principal painting for the Royal Academy in 1830. Also, the mention of the press here relates to Lucas installing a press in his own house by this time. **Beckett supposes that the Cooks mentioned here probably refers to George Cooke, the line engraver, or his elder brother, William, or both of them.
