<value>A letter from John Constable to David Lucas. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 16, page 26). The leaf has been numbered S16, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads: '? Jan 1830'. Shirley finds it impossible to date this letter accurately in the year 1830. Beckett dates it to the end of October

TRANSCRIPT:

<recto>
return the Jacques by the bearers out of your way [this was perhaps added as a PS after writing the main letter]
Dear Lucas
         I have not troubled you with the proof as I did not think it was in any hurry - as our work had been standing still for the last ten days.
      I shall be at home 'till 1/4 past 6. this Evening - & in the morning as I sleep here.

<verso>
if the little boy will brake the Glass - bring it yourself
              Mr Lucas
