<value>This is an undated letter from John Constable to David Lucas. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 22, page 30-31) and Beckett (page 330-331). Beckett says 'probably' written after July 1830. The leaf has been numbered S22, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads: ''? Jany 1830''.

TRANSCRIPT:

Dear Lucas
I am concerned at hearing nothing of you - and fear you are ill.
The delay of all my concerns almost breaks my heart in all that relates to my work. I have made up my mind not to print the future no.s ourselves - for I find it take much longer to print- than to engrave them.
I should have liked have settled the account of the first number, but not seeing you - I don't know what to do - I shall pay with pleasure the 17 Gns. for the last two plates but at the same time I will bargain with you not to exceed 15 Gns. for any future plate for this work. You must agree to it or it may break/hang* up the work - with me I hope you are not ill I shall not be at home this Eveng as I am going early to Hampd [t/n: Hampstead].
                                                                                  Yours
                                                                              truly - J.C.
I shall be at home to receive any message from you - I hope you are not ill - as you expected to be so -

---
*Shirley took this word to be 'hang' while Beckett views it as 'break'.

In his notes (page 31), Shirley dates this letter before August 1830.</value>
