This list has a multiple corrections made with pencil. Beckett assumes these to be the result discussions with Lucas. The rearrangement on the verso appears to have been scribbled either earlier or later. These drafts show how, at this stage, Constable's plans were fluid. Beckett also notes that these lists make it clear that Constable was keen on striking a balance among landscape, architectural, marine and historic subjects. For instance, Beckett writes that the watercolour drawing called 'Jaques and the Wounded Stage' may be viewed as an example of the historic style. This would prevent monotony and make 'English Landscape' more representative - 'something more than a guide-book to the Stour Valley' (Beckett, page 335).

Shirley (page 32) dates this letter to August - early September 1830. Beckett has also attempted to identify some of these entries (in Appendix A, No. II).</value>
