The manuscript is foliated 1-18 and contains several revisions in the author's hand as well as pencil annotations in another hand (apparently by the person overseeing the printing). The first page carries the pencil note: "Proof must be posted in time to catch the French mail tonight" as well as the name "Doughty"; subsequent pages carry the names "Boyd", "Soulsby", "Crowe", "Bunce", etc., presumably assigning portions of the press copy to different typesetters. The volume also contains a letter from Charles Whibley to Sydney Cockerell regarding the bequest of this item; the letter is pasted in among the front flyleaves. It also contains a 1952 newspaper clipping from The Times, containing the obituary of Katharine Adams (Mrs Edmund Webb) who bound the manuscript in its current leather binding.
