The leaf has been numbered S32, referring to the order in Shirley's publication.\n\nTRANSCRIPT:\n\n---\nMr Lucas\n\n                                                                                            New Year day\n                                                                                                           1831\nDear Lucas,\n               The worse of a letter by the post - is - that one can give no answer - yesterday was our grand annual day at the Academy for changing the Council! \n         The message you left is so undecided that I think it better to send up to you at once lest I should be out again [t\/n: a word crossed out here] as I have many places to all at today but I shall be at home in the Eveng. perhaps it will be as well to send the long Landscape of the ''Vale''* as we shall not use it.\n         And the Heath that I may touch the proofs here - for I do not like the one on the board you left last week - \nthe others are far, far, better - though I can only detect it in printing -\n         I hope you will not lose the solemnity of it - the 2d No is very much liked\n         Let me know by the man when I shall see you - for if it could be by day light so much the better -\n                                                                                               Your J.C.\nI hope we shall not spoil the ''Heath'' all the touch is [t\/n: 'was' has been crossed out] in the Sky - \n\n---\n\n*Both Shirley (footnotes, page 38) and Beckett (page 338) identify the ''Vale'' mentioned in this letter to be a picture different to the one engraved as 'Summer Morning'. They believe it refers to a large painting called the 'Long Vale'.
