The leaf has been numbered S38, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. \n\nTRANSCRIPT:\n\n---\nMr Lucas \n\n                                                                                                27 Jany 1831\nDear Lucas\n               I was on the step just as you left it last evening. You were with call had I heard* it. \n         I did not like to disturb you - but the day after you left the last proof I touchd [t\/n: touched] it so admirably that I was [t\/n: word deleted] very anxious to talk with you about it [.] I do not like the last you left last night [.] I fear in one point we have done irreparable mischief [.] I liked the one before best - it was the most fit to go - I am however so often deceived** by the printing that I will wait 'till I see you -\n        I must go out this morng [t\/n: morning] - & I shall return about 3 - & then go to the Acay [t\/n: Academy] at [^] 1\/4 pt 5 [t\/n: quarter past five].\n   I am very desirous [t\/n: 'anxious' crossed out] to see you as this impression make me anxious about the plate\n                                                                                               Yours truly\n                                                                                                               John Constable\n\n---\n\n*Beckett reads this word as 'known'.\n**Shirley reads this word as 'damned'.\n\nBeckett (page 340) notes that during January 1831, Constable was on duty as visitor in the Life Academy.
