TRANSCRIPT:

For
Mr Lucas

Dear Lucas
My Cold plays the devil with me - and I am making sed* work on my canvas.
perhaps you you could come down if you are not busy - but do not put yourself out of your way - ''husband your strength'' - when we meet I must talk to you of many things especially about ''the book'' - many will take it or any thing else they can get of me - but I must be carefull - we live in a ''City of Sharks'' - who are the needy preying upon the simple who have got any thing -
I send for ''the head of the Lock'' to hang up 'till we want it.
             Yours truly J.C.
I am so weak that I can hardly write

2 Feby 1831

*Shirley reads this word as 'sed' and comments 'v.l. 'wash'.' Beckett, however, identifies the word as 'sad'.</value>
