<value>A manuscript transcription of an essay entitled 'The Adaptation of Talents'. Foliated 1-21; text occupies the recto sides of ff. 1-13. The handwriting is neat with a few revisions in the same hand as the rest of the text.

A note on the flyleaf identifies it as

"'An Essay on the Adaptation of Talent as regards Genius and Art. Autograph Manuscript by Sir Joshua Reynolds, President of the Royal Academy"

Below it is written, in the same hand:

"This manuscript was the adoration of Sir Thomas Lawrence at whose sale I obtained it. J. H. Burn"

Further down on the same page is a note by former Fitzwilliam director Sydney C. Cockerell questioning this attribution. Cockerell writes:

"The date of this MS is probably 1790. I do not think that it is an autograph MS. Reynolds's eyesight was failing at this time. Was it dictated?
SCC Nov 17 1916

Is there any certainty that this is by Reynolds at all?
Is it perhaps by his sister Miss Frances Reynolds? See Graves & Cronin, p. 818

This leaf [i.e. the flyleaf] has a watermark 1799, but it is not part of the MS."

The reference to Graves and Cronin is to "A history of works of Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A." by Algernon Graves, F.S.A. and William Vine Cronin, in which they note that Frances Reynolds had written an "Essay on Taste".

As Cockerell notes, the flyleaf has a 1799 watermark, but it is not made from the same paper as the rest of the manuscript, whose watermark shows a post horn in a shield above the initials H&W.

The manuscript was purchased by Charles Fairfax Murray from F. S. Ellis, who must presumably have obtained it from J. H. Burn.</value>
