The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 48, pages 47-48) and Beckett (page 321). The leaf has been numbered S48, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads ‘March 23 - 1831'. TRANSCRIPT: --- Dear Lucas, Let me know when I shall see you? I am anxious very much that you should call - as I am sadly lonely - & do not get well - but I am very much better. I have have formed the wish to ass a ''Windmill''* to the set leaving the ''Title'' & '''Vignette'' distinct. and to be given in. which will look handsome and not a falling off. I have made a drawing of the Title for you to see & I wish you to chuse [t/n: 'a' crossed out] the Windmill. Can you walk down this Evg? - or when? I have made a great impression to my large Canvas** - Beechey was here yesterday - and said ''Why damn it Constable what a damned fine picture you are making but you look damned ill - and you - have got a damned bad cold.'' so that you have evidence on Oath - of my being about a fine picture & that I am looking ill. I hope Mrs Lucas is better - & yourself well Yours truly March 23 John Constable 1831 --- *Beckett (page 347) notes that the chosen windmill was one near Redhill in Surrey, which had attracted Constable during one of his coach journeys between London and Brighton. Both Beckett and Shirley view this engraving to be 'Summer Afternoon'. **Shirley's footnotes (page 48): 'According to Leslie, p. 201, this is 'Salisbury from the Meadows'.
