The leaf has been numbered S49, referring to the order in Shirley's publication.\n\nTRANSCRIPT:\n\n---\n                                                                              March 24th 1831 [t\/n: in pencil, perhaps by Lucas]\nDear Lucas\n                  I send up old Holland, with the proof, &c. as I am quite unwilling to bring you into this wretched weather - as you have got a very nice touched proof of the Evg & the picture, I have thought it better not to touch this. indeed it is in such a sad state I really should not know how to meddle with it. but you will do it quite well - I have not seen it by daylight - I have no wish to see the Heath - unless indeed I could see it as it was 2 months ago - [t\/n: word deleted] I have touched & retouched , and trifled away - all the fine sentiment you once had in it - & it now gives me no pleasure in comparison - however I suppose we can yet help it a little - [t\/n: 'but' crossed out] but I have no desire to do it for the present - - I have formed a serious resolution to make the work consist of 3 Nos only adding a title & Vignette - the work worries me greatly - it was indeed thought of ''in evil hour''-\n           do not come out this sad Eveng - it will do you harm. & me no good - I fear by [t\/n: word deleted] what my servant said Mrs Lucas is not so well - I get very little better Dr Davis* [t\/n: 'says' crossed out] (who now & then calls for a Guinea) says He cannot get his patients well this year at all - my poor John is in a sad state - but Drew is curing Charles head** that Davis made much worse - & so Dr Davis says himself - [t\/n: word deleted] I am so involved with my pictures that I do not wish to think of my book or any other calamity for the present.
