<value>This is an undated letter from John Constable to David Lucas. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 58, page 52) and Beckett (page 350). The leaf has been numbered S58, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads ‘Aug 1831'; another one on the bottom left reads '? Aug 1831'.

TRANSCRIPT:

---
Dear Lucas
I am most anxious to see a nice rich & full proof of the ''Morning'' [.] I got to a council - on Thursday at 5 - and can be seen next Day here -
and I dine at Dulwich on Saturday - & can be seen in the middle of the day -
                                                                              Yrs J.C -

---

Regarding the date of this letter, Shirley writes 'Shortly before 16 July 1831'. Beckett, however, supposes that the letter was written on 11 or 12 July 1831. The latter seems more likely because in his letter dated 14 July 1831 (Constable/EL/1/1/43), Constable writes that he hoped to see a touched proof of the 'Morning' which he had asked for in this letter.</value>
