<value>Holograph manuscript of Atalanta in Calydon: A Tragedy by Algernon Charles Swinburne. The draft includes a substantial amount of alterations, revisions and deletions. It is written on paper from at least two different stocks (white paper with an 1816 watermark and blue paper with an 1863 watermark).

The front flyleaf has the following note in the hand of Charles Fairfax Murray:

I purchased this MS of F. S. Ellis /23rd of June 1884/ - who had it from Charles A. Howell - to whom it was given by the poet. The MS is unfortunately incomplete at the end and most of the Songs are wanting, Swinburne gave away some sheets, probably as autographs, one was in the possession of Philip Bourke Marston - with the song beginning "when the hounds of spring are on winter's traces"; after his death this sheet was given by his father to an American lady, I have marked on the guards the numbers of the pages in the 1st edition that correspond to this MS. Charles Fairfax Murray.

Below this, there is an another note, in pencil, by Sydney Cockerell:

There is only one complete chorus in this MS. that beginning "who hath given me speech?" (pp. 23b 22a 22b 23a). On p. 6b are two of the choral verses spoken by Meleager and Atalanta and an imperfect draft of a verse spoken by the chorus (7 verses later than the other two). SC 12 Aug 1925.</value>
