TRANSCRIPT: --- <recto> Dear Lucas- I shall like to compare the touched proofs together should we find it possible to proceed with the Salisbury - I rather like this - and it gives me fresh [t/n: word deleted] heart rather - for to let 3 months nearly pass - and no advance and no neglect on either of us is too bad - for you have never neglected me an hour - only that damned old Bowyer* who ought to be hanged back to back with his infamous woman** - has made your mind uneasy - and then you always retrograde. <verso> Mr Lucas [t/n: this letter is written on the verso of a letter whose content has been crossed out] --- *Shirley's note on Bowyer reads: 'Probably Robert Bowyer (1758-1834), whose portraits of William IV and Queen Adelaide Lucas engraved and Bowyer published this year. In a letter, belonging to Mr. P.D. Leslie, Constable writes to Leslie that Bowyer is using Lucas cruelly.' **Shirley and Beckett view this as a comment on Bowyer's portrait of Queen Adelaide.
