The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 88, page 70) and Beckett (page 373). The leaf has been numbered S88, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads ‘Feb.1832'. TRANSCRIPT: --- For Mr Lucas I go out at one or 1/2 past Dear Lucas I was in hopes of seeing you last Evng & came from the Acady early - I am so sadly greived at the proof you now send me of the Castle that I am most anxious to see you - Your art may have resources of which I know nothing - but so deplorably deficient in all feeling is the present state of the plate but I can suggest nothing at all - to me it is utterly - utterly - hopeless - I shall do not a bit towards finished the other plates - it would be worse than folly. I like the Lock, you now send - Sir G. Beaumont leaves London Monday week - and I wish we may be ready with print for the Castle - & as I have promised him a pair perhaps you have one ready - & for which I can pay you. I am sadly distracted about my work - its emptying my pocket is the least evil. it has disturbed the peace of my mind . always. its only consolation is tjhat it may have done you some good.
