<value>This is a letter from John Constable to David Lucas. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No.89, page 70). The leaf has been numbered S4, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. The leaf's top portion is torn off, where perhaps the date was written. Shirley dates this letter to early February 1832.

The Six large[?] [t/n: written vertically alongside the prints]
The Glebe farm } [...] all fine
The Castle or Nore 5 } [...] indeed some
The New Sarum 2 } of the best in the book
The Waterloo Bridge 6 }

                                                                ? March 1832
I cannot think of any thing much more eligible than this - as it will then put no new plate in hand - and I hope it will be possible to reground the edges of the two plates The Waterloo Bridge & the [t/n: 'New Sarum' crossed out] Salisbury -
         The little Glebe Farm is thus excluded - if it should so happen that the ''ships'' or the White Horse are preferred - as pairs - but - still it will be eligible and I shall - finish the little Glebe farm from the beautifull touched [t/n: 'plate' crossed out] proof of [t/n: 'the' crossed out] it with the ruin - then we can chuse when all are finishd which to take - but certainly - both the Waterloo & New Sarum must be enlarged at all events to match the other large plates as above - & so have ''Six of the large size'' - perhaps the Ships may left out [t/n: illegible words]

<verso>
[t/n: it appears that this letter was written on the verso of another document whose content has been crossed out]

PS.
| { Let the Waterloo - pair with
| { the Hadleigh Castle - as they
| { are both the Thames - and the Hadleigh is the
| { largest plate of the whole - therefore they will pair best in all respects -
          To the admirers of English Landscape
                          This Plate of
                     a Barge passing a Lock.
(Engraved from a picture painted by John Constable R.A.
                is most respectfully inscribed
                        by the Obedient Servant
