TRANSCRIPT:

---
Dear Lucas
Before you print the frontispiece - pray drypoint down the light [t/n: 'of' crossed out] on the bank on which the Man sits - it is too bare from the Man to the right hand Edge of the picture - also - a [t/n: 'marked' deleted] line on the water over the lightest part as it is too bare - a very little will do it.
The dogs snout must be tipped with a light touch - but that you mentioned -
when shall I see you dine out again today - none the worse for my Dulwich with the Royal Academicians yesterday - that I know of - I dine with Lane & Turner. snugly - alone - J.C--.
I am with child to see Salisbury - all over besmudged - and buried for we can do nothing - without ''stuff'' - any more than other doctors.
                                                                                       Yours J.C.

The light by the man drawing to which I object is [?]* the Sun shine over the pales - it is a good thing
