<value>This is a letter from John Constable to David Lucas, dated 3 March 1832. The second leaf, though undated, also carries the headings 'page 2' and 'page 3' like the first leaf. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 95, page 74) and Beckett (page 369). The leaves have been numbered S95, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top of the first leaf reads ‘March 1832', and that on the top of the verso of the second one reads '? Oct 1832'.

                                                                      page - 1
Dear Lucas,
                   I hope you will come this Eving - for I am in a sad fidget - but not very bad - as I have discovered one or two resorts - in our present difficulty. either of which it is not impossible we may adopt -
       Either the 'Waterloo' or the 'Yarmouth' - would do very well. perhaps the Yarmouth best - but what do you say to the adoption of both of them - and let the Castle remain ''in status quo''-
       I assure you they - look extremely well on the floor - as thus for the fifth No.
No.5
      { The Glebe Farm } with March 3d 1832 [t/n: written at right angles]
      { The Waterloo Bridge } Frontispiece
      { The Autumnal Evng - &       }    &
      { The Yarmouth Peir } Vignette
If however the Castle is so near a proof. that it would make but little time difference - in concompleating - that or either of the others - it would be best to adopt - as it is so noble a work.
                                          but my plan above would soon settle out ''hash'' - somehow or another -
P.S.
pray come this Evng - &
bring with you a nice french proof
or two - flat - of the frontispiece - for Mr Martin* to go on monday.

<verso/cover>
For
    Mr Lucas

<Leaf 2>
<recto>

Dear Lucas                                                   page 2
/ Pitt is going to Leslies - and he will call for the Frontispiece with a portfolio. if they are at Hand - if not - do'nt
  hinder yourself but bring them tonight

/ What a good Companion the ''Yarmouth'' - makes for ''Old Sarum'' - I can bring the light under the right hand
  Cloud a little more. which might enable to to give a middle tint to the blank place - by stippling it or printing it as
  you best know how -

The little ''Glebe Farm'' = and - the Ships Aground - make an beautifull pair - and I do assure you that
                { Old Billy lotts - would work in well instead of the
                { Old Sarum - which we can if we like adopt -
            Pitt will bring the Glebe Farm - Picture -
                                                                     John Constable
Have you another proof or two of Yarmouth to touch upon -?

                                                                      page 3
/ I should think on considering all these papers that Yarmouth would make by far the best companion to Old
  Sarum
                                                                         ___

/ At the sametime - Old billy Lotts if it could be regrounded at the sides - is a lovely subject.
                                                                       _______
/ The Lord Mayors Show - I believe is rather too good a ''joke'' - [t/n: word deleted] to be received into our
   Church - nothing can I fear make him either ''Apostolic'' - or ''Canonical'' so uncongenial is any part of this
   Hedeous ''Gomorah'' - - -                            J.C
and yet after all - The Waterloo - is a famous composition - and ought to give much pleasure to all - but it is the Devil - and I am ''sore perplexed'' J.C
