<value>This is a note written by John Constable, most likely sent alongside a letter to David Lucas. Shirley suggests that this note was perhaps written in April 1832. The published transcript of this note can be found in Shirley (No.101, page 79). The leaf has been numbered S101, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top of the verso reads ‘? June 1832'.

TRANSCRIPT:

<recto>
                       -Yarmouth-
- The Cloud over head made somewhat different
- The stones a little darker here and there
- The Rays of light [crushed?] and flattened to more softness and breadth -
- The little [t/n: 'lady' crossed out] ladies cleared off the sea -
- The stern port of the boat a flat light of half tint -

<verso>
                  -Autumnal Evening-
- The foliage about the sun massed
- Sun cleared about its orb -
- and small dark streak under the Sun
- {Dusky clouds about the Rooks cleared & made more horizontal
  Small light tree to the left improved
- Distance helped - No post [t/n: written vertically]
- smoke put out
- village church added under the tree
- avoid the dusky sweep
foreground by woman - put down
- path cleared ever so little.
