Shirley dates this letter to early May 1832, but also notes that the second paragraph is quoted in Leslie (p. 248) who places it tentatively in 1833. Beckett, however, suggests that this letter was written between 8 and 25 June 1832. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 107, page 83) and Beckett (page 379). The leaf has been numbered S107, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads ‘? April 1833'. TRANSCRIPT: --- Dear Lucas I am much disappointed at not seeing you. These things annoy me a good deal - besides I put off a very pleasant dinner party at Hampstead on purpose to see you for I was most anxious all yesterday & today to see he new proofs & the Stour - and to look over other subjects but I am compleatly flung on my back - I would never mind paying a man rather than be so kept - for when I did leave Hampd today - I had many places to go to - and was unwilling to leave home in the hourly expectation of Your coming - ever since 2. or 3 - o clock - Poor infatuated printer Sparrow* - has done nothing for me for 3 week - not a single India - copy - or one plain one can I get . but he has just sent me a large piece of wedding cake - and this too - just as he has been begging assistance to buy bread & butter - the devil undoubtedly find much fun in this town - or we never could hear of such acts of exceeding folly - All is uncertain about tomorrow - I am not sure of coming as I have a poor boy sadly ill.
