x The Shepherd Boy*
Dear Lucas
I send you the picture x with my best hopes & wishes. & which I assure you are not slight - or disinterested but I am more anxious for your sake than my own. but my anxious wish is that your enthusiasm may not be thrown away or prove unpropitious.
My dear little girl is better** - God be praised & with his blessing she may recover - she got much sweet sleep yesterday - but otherwise it was my most anxious day though the fear was greatest (pulse 150) on friday. I hope for a gradual advancement now - I am full of anxiety about the other two little dears - who of necessity must be left at the school. but apart from her Yrs J.C.

This morning the Cryer of Hampd was occupied this way - ''O Yes'' - this is &c - the Revd Doctor Irvine*** - will reach on the top of the Heath at 1/2 past six o clock this Evg - on the bench under the tree at the corner of Mr Holfords Garden - God save the King - ''&c &c - do your people do these things? - ''surely the devil reignth'' ...
                                                                                                                                                      Yours dear Lucas
                                                                                                                                                           J. Constable
Mr Savage**** says ''they'' only preach for ''fun'' - I wish that would make fun in any other name than God's - but we live in a strange age of the world =
Have you anything to send back by Pitt - of my lumber - Sparrow***** is at work at last -

*This is added in pencil, perhaps by a later hand. 'The Shepherd Boy' was another name for 'The Lock'.

**Beckett notes that on 22 June 1832, Constable's daughter Minna had a serious attack of scarlet fever.

***Edward Irving - founder of the Irvingite religion.

****Constable's housekeeper.
