<value>This is an undated letter from John Constable to David Lucas. Shirley dates it to around April 1833. Beckett dates to Feb-April 1833, but says it may have been written before this time. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 138, page 102) and Beckett (page 394). The leaf has been numbered S138, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads ‘? April 1832'.

To
Mr D. Lucas

Dear Lucas,
Pitt is going to Leslies and I send you this note - I know not if you are doing anything for me but I want a good many old Sarums. As I shall displace those new one with the ''rays'' - when I get others - as you have got it now beautifull so is the Castle -
that cursed plate of Lane's* has ruined [t/n: word deleted] both you and me - but angry as I am I have by accident discovered [t/n: 'the' deleted] a circumstance which I have put a stop to as it would have been a serious ''defamation'' of you - Lane has given [H?]** 20 gs. [t/n: Guineas] to get up the plates & I found out what they were all about - but Boner will tell you as you now seem adhamed of and shy of me -
Had I not the philosophy of the devil - I must have been driven into St Lukes*** by my unfortunate book which as laid in bundles all over my stairs since X'mas = Lanes print not allowing you time to help me but I have to pay all -

---

*Beckett mentions that this refers to Samuel Lane's portrait of Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke, which had been made over to Thomas Hodgetts, whose engraving was published by Lane and others this year. Beckett also notes that Samuel Lane had engaged Lucas to engrave this portrait, but was unable to pay Lucas.

**Illegible. Beckett reads this as Hodgetts, while Shirley reads is as Hodgson, referring to a printseller.
