The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 139, page 103) and Beckett (page 398) in his section for January-June 1833. The leaf has been numbered S139, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads \u2018? Dec 1836'.\n\nTRANSCRIPT:\n\n---\n[t\/n: there is an address written in different ink - the leaf was perhaps reused]\nMr Lucas\n\nDear Lucas -\n                     I shall be glad if you are not later than 7 - or 1\/2 past 6. I want to be off - had I the wings of a dove I would flee away and be no more seen -\n         [t\/n: 'I have a line' crossed out] I wish the same pains had always been taken as now with the printing those which Alfred now brings are certainly superior to any yet come. I have just had a letter from Newcastle to say that a sett are coming back to me - because they are such bad impressions. these things annoy me - because it make me appear a very ''bad tradesman'' - and in my new character - I would like to appear - respectable.\n       I have a note from Laneto say that they never meant any such thing - and that I had totally misunderstood him & that my alarm was groundless & falsely formed - &c &c &c for Mr Colnaghi had assured him nothing of the kind was meant - the truth is that my stone thrown in amongst them put all to flight - & the one mad & alarmed one is a Rascal - the other is a fool - & poor L. a dupe - I don't trouble you with poor Lanes papers - they are miserable things and no use to any body - the stone told, and I hope has dispersed a [scene?] of Villany.
