Well Walk Oct 8. 1833
Dear Lucas
Neither Mr Boner nor myself were able to decipher the name of your street: though the rest of the note was legible enough - I therefore got Mary* to print it up - from the two or three names we gave her - I I am glad she succeeded.
I am going to Folkstone on thursday to see my boys - John has hurt himself in his sleep but I hope I shall find him better - I am anxious to be back as I am now quietly engaged at work - both drawing & painting -
I was not aware that there could be a bit more to do to the plates to bring them to my last touched proofs - than what you would cheerfully and gladly have done for me - I certainly did expect it as a right - but it must be now left to your own sense of honor ---- I should have thought indeed that as You were so fully aware of my calamitous situation - and that as the work is utterly abortive - and that it was by your advice and persuasion - that the main expence of it was incurred - and the mass of deas stock accumulated - (though I do not think amiss of your motives) - I must say that I am surprised by the ''spirit'' of your letter of yesterday** - especially when you expressed no such thoughts at the time I brought you the proofs - but quite the contrary ! - and besides only think of the last ''sixteen pounds'' -!!!
I can now only repeat that I must leave all to yourself and to your own sense of what in duty you owe to me [^] (even if it should have a little exceeded). - in every sense of the word - I shall certainly not spend another guinea on the plates = or on the work - unless I shall ever think it worth advertizing - or perhaps printing a prospectus to - My unfortunate connection with Mr Wright - has shown me what it is to ''throw good money after bad'' I will never ''be led'' into it again !-
I am
dear Lucas
always yours very sincerely
John Constable

Mr
David Lucas Esq
27. Westbourne Street
near the Kings Road
Pimlico

**This letter perhaps dealt with the proofs of the Appendix plates. Beckett notes that apparently Constable expected Lucas to work on these without further remuneration, to which Lucas protested in a letter.</value>
