To
    Mr David Lucas

27 -

Dear Lucas
I send you the ''Valley'' - I think perhaps you may like to look at it at your leisure before you make up your mind - both You and me ought to guard ourselves against our own enthusiasm . - though we are indebted to it for everything -
I am writing to Worcester* - I must go - they are fully expecting me with my sermons - but I must take care that while I ''am preaching to others I myself be a Castaway'' - who would ever have thought of my turning Methodist preacher - that is a preacher on Method'' - but I shall do good - to that Art - for which I live -
                                                                                                      Yours truly
                                                                                                                       J.C
Shall I see you this Evg? have you any thing to send by Old Joe? - I shall be at home - I want you early - to look out a few Copies for the binder. J.C

[t/n: the following is written inversely above the cover page]
Pray think of the R.A.
what can you lose - by such a step - J.C
