The letter is dated 26 December - the year, however, is unclear. Shirley reads it as 1836 while Beckett reads it as 1829. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 188, page 139) and Beckett (page 322). The leaf has been numbered S188, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads \u2018? 1829 \/ Dec. 1836'.\n\nTRANSCRIPT:\n\n---\nMr Lucas\n\nDear Lucas\n               I send my man for the Wood which will be now usefull to me - I do not send the desk - as perhaps you have not fully decided on it.\n         My chief object in sending this morning is that I am rather about yourself - as you left me very late and may have met with X'mas thieves - &c &c - in your dreary walk.\n     Let me know when I shall see you - Yours truly\n                                                       J.
