<value>This is a letter from John Constable to David Lucas, written on 31 December 1836. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 190, page 140) and Beckett (page 432). The leaf has been numbered S190, referring to the order in Shirley's publication.

TRANSCRIPT:

---
Dear Lucas -

Accept my thanks for the Proofs - I have not time (so late) to say much but what I see of it is delightfull - - it may want tone - no doubt - or may mean fullness - which may come in printing - wherein full work on it is almost all the fears I entertained are done away with - - we must get - tone & depth - & force - back again to the large trees in the distance - those on the left of the poplar = at the bottom of the Gardens - -
the reflection of the White Horse is beautifull & true
some of the spots on the brambles near the post may be toned down - but all these things are the job of an hour - while I am with You - & which we can talk about when we meet -
God preserve your excellent wife - and give her a happy hour - I have not forgot my own anxieties at such a
time though they are never to return to me
I send what you ask for - namely 3. sovereigns - if you wish for more let me know on Monday -

I beg to Thank you again & again for the - most lovely Winter Peice* - I ever saw - it far surpasses the Ruisdael** - & is even more sublime than the Summer Cloud - Yours very truly
                                                                                           John Constable

[t/n: the following appears to have been added as postscript, and is written over the first few sentences at right angles]
You have caused the Old Year to slip through my hands with pleasurable feelings - we now only one hour & a quarter [t/n: 'of' crossed out] left of the year 1836 [.] farewell

---

*Perhaps refers to an imperfectly inked plate, which gave the appearance of a winter scene.

**A winter scene by Ruisdael which Constable had copied in 1832.</value>
