Shirley dates it to January 1837, while Beckett places it soon after a letter dated 11 November 1836 (Constable\/EL\/1\/1\/141). The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 193, page 142) and Beckett (page 430). The leaf has been numbered S193, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads \u2018? Jany 1837'.\n\nTRANSCRIPT:\n\n---\nI have worked on the proof a little - as thus -\n1 the end of the rail of the bridge - sharpened off the water near the swallows -\n   The dog -                                     is a little more cleaned of the ground & distinct -& a thinner dog -& longer legs\n   The bit of lightning                    - which we were doubtfull about - last night 0 I took away - for the better.\n   the foreground about the posts and old woman is cleared up a bit.\n   so is the Rainbow -\n\nand you saw all the Rest -\n\nthat is all and pray do all - & then the print will be without a companion in the World -  - pray keep this touched proof for me - and I send it carefully - that it may be safe from dirt & rubbing - you can if you please keep the portfolio 'till its return - & do not take off the slip of wood.\nThinking as I do of this work - and the love one feels for ''one's own'' - made me wish to possess it - but I am glad that you did not accept my offer - as it is no business of mine - & no doubt ''the trade'' - would have hindered the sale of the plate in my hands - & they always combine\n-\nI am glad however to find my offer exceeded what you proposed to get from the trade - for I should even after all my pains - (& no copyright demanded on my part) - I should have been asshamed to have offered you less than you asked them - which when their horrid system of bills is considered & the still further horrid system of discounting the same - is considered - my offer would have far exceeded the amount - so that doubtless you had other reasons - - of which can know nothing - nor do I wish to hear them - and perhaps you are wright - I am fast becoming an Old friend - new ones are most likely to bring temporary benefit - & you are young & have children - and you must keep friends with the trade - but remember on them you cannot encroach - if ever you should do so far forget yourself as to attempt it -\n                            I think dear Lucas the proof is now everything we could wish [.] what would Charley say to such a ''touched'' proof as this - but he may not be alive to see it - I shall [frame?] it as soon as You have done with it - do take care not to dirty it - what an awkward strainer it is upon on.\n         You shall have the little plates when you like - we must not forget Segur [t\/n: William Seguier] - as he is a \n         far greater man than the king nowadays.\n\nConstable\n\n---"}]},"identifier":[{"accession_number":"Constable\/EL\/1\/1\/150","primary":true,"type":"accession number","value":"Constable\/EL\/1\/1\/150"},{"priref":"110009913","type":"priref","value":"110009913"},{"type":"uri","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110009913","value":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110009913"}],"institutions":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"lifecycle":{"creation":[{"maker":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-29619","uid":"adlib-agent-29619","uuid":"ef67fb8d-9a82-3301-9947-b8d0526effb3"},"summary_title":"Constable, John"}]}]},"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","units":"mm","value":"230"},{"dimension":"Width","units":"mm","value":"187"}]},"summary_title":"MS Letter, Constable to Lucas","title":[{"value":"MS Letter, Constable to Lucas"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
