The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 195, page 143) and Beckett (page 435). The leaf has been numbered S195, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top reads \u2018Mar. 1837'.\n\nTRANSCRIPT:\n\n---\nDear Lucas\n                      I send you the proof - fearing you are ill.\n        I know nothing of the letter engraver.\n           delays breed losses.\n           I am anxious - to show my dedication to Chantry.\n             I have made a slight alteration to this proof - which may I beg of you to do.\n             I will strike it over leaf but while I am writing and think of it - ''what shall I say to Neave'' - the proofs are not come - your illness & a multitude of occupations & my plate are quite sufficient to delay all other things -\nMr Cooke the R. Academician - said yesterday that the 'Salisbury' was a very fine thing -\n      I hope [t\/n: 'your' crossed out] that obliging - and most strange - & off Ruffian your painter - will be allowed to have just his own way in printing this plate. that is now we see we must not be ''too full'' - it is as he say only fit for ''a parcel of painters'' - it will not be liked - any more than the 'English Landscape' if it is too smutty - Still it must not be ''beare & bald'' - not to Close - Mellow & full but clean & fresh - and rather [t\/n: 'of' deleted] (much rather) inclining to brown & grey - in tint - I send to spare time - I now mention what I wish done - a little too where the shadow of the post was taken away it now looks monotonous - unmeaning & bad a [shadow?] struck as I have put beside the second post & Old woman will do good - so necessary to the water - thus vide proof.\n           Next the Cloud near the bow on the right - about midway - is too sharp - for about two or 3 inches - see grey chalk . & compare these changes with those you have - 18.
