It is undated, but appears to follow the previous item (Constable\/EL\/1\/1\/151), which is dated 18 March 1837. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 196, page 144) and Beckett (page 436). The leaf has been numbered S196, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. A pencil inscription on the top of the verso reads \u2018Sep. 1835'. This letter is written on a piece of what appears to be draft letterpress material, and hence, the verso has some letterpress text. \n\nTRANSCRIPT:\n\n---\n<recto>\nI have had much anxiety about the bow - it has never quite been satisfactory in its drawing to my Eye -\nJohn & I have now clearly and directly set it out - and in the most accurate manner possible - which must obviate - all cavillings - & carping - from the learned Ignorant.\npray do it. and if you are frighted [t\/n: frightened] see me - but it can most easily be done - it will at once obviate the look of a Gothick arch - with lancet top - thus - see above scratched with my pen [t\/n: rough sketch drawn over the text]\n\nThe flattening at the left hand top corner will do great wonders - & give great beauty & correctness - also [men?] the rest. as it is but little out & not any [t\/n: word crossed out] part to fill up - with shade. \nThe shadow by the old woman between the posts does much good \nLet your amiable Ruffian* print clear. J.C. [t\/n: this sentence is written at right angle on the left side]\n\n<verso>\nChamberlayne** says you must have a lease - or else you have been deceived - as it is so often referred to in the Indenture -\n\n[t\/n: 'Mr Lucas' is written in the centre of the page]\n\nI have put a pin in the centre of the rainbow. it is in the Elder bush.\n\nJoe shall bring the bow proof back if you like to see it with me first\n\n[Also?] Wright would be glad to settle . So I gave him 5\u00a3. either [from?] you or me - as he is [? ?] to finish with.\n\n---\n\n*Lucas' printer.\n\n**Beckett supposes this to be Alfred Frederick Chamberlayne, a solicitor admitted King's Bench in 1835."}]},"identifier":[{"accession_number":"Constable\/EL\/1\/1\/152","primary":true,"type":"accession number","value":"Constable\/EL\/1\/1\/152"},{"priref":"110009915","type":"priref","value":"110009915"},{"type":"uri","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110009915","value":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110009915"}],"institutions":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"lifecycle":{"creation":[{"maker":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-29619","uid":"adlib-agent-29619","uuid":"ef67fb8d-9a82-3301-9947-b8d0526effb3"},"summary_title":"Constable, John"}]}]},"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","units":"mm","value":"223"},{"dimension":"Width","units":"mm","value":"142"}]},"summary_title":"MS Letter, Constable to Lucas","title":[{"value":"MS Letter, Constable to Lucas"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
