<value>This is an undated letter from John Constable to David Lucas. Owing to its content, it is most likely that it was written around 1837. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Beckett (page 435). A pencil inscription on the top reads ‘Mar. 1837'.

Mr Lucas
27 Westbourne St

                                                                                                             Saturday
Dear Lucas
I am disappointed again at not seeing you here this afternoon [.] I felt sure Holland would find you - but engravers are wandering runabout runaway people, always at large -
Can you come this Evg - I will stop [?] hope of you - I wish so much to see you - send back the Mill & the Salisbury impressions - when [? ?] - I did not know they were in the press - pray come -
                                                                                                                        Yours J.C.
I want to see you [badly?] [.] Cook* wanted to see you - he wants Smirke's Lady Pentweazle -
What do you intend ever doing with the two large landscapes.

---
