<value>This is an undated letter from John Constable to David Lucas. Shirley dates it to March 1830, but Beckett places it towards late 1830. The published transcript of this letter can be found in Shirley (No. 15, page 25 - this, however, excludes a lot of content) and Beckett (page 335). The leaf has been numbered 15, referring to the order in Shirley's publication. Alongside the letter, the envelope also includes a typescript transcript, prepared by former Museum staff.

TRANSCRIPT:

Dear Lucas .
I send the things - and pray send me the little West End in return - or any thing else
I send the Jaques in a flat - Yet feel assured you will not make a flat of him
Enclosed id the broken India proof of the [t/n: 'coast' crossed out] Weymouth which I beg you will send to Mrs Leslie, & with it a proof of the West End for Leslie - and the breaker [t/n: Beckett identifies this as 'A Seabeach'] if you think proper -
do this at your leisure !!! I am much pleased at what we are about so far -- only that I fear if we do not mind we shall not have enough of the ''Pastoral'' ---
Leslie has not been here & likes much the sketch in a lane which I send for you to look at - as a lovely full subject - rich & novel - & what is better than all ''natural''
It would be a glorious full subject --
Yours J.C ---
