<value>Undated note from John Constable to David Lucas. Alongside the letter, the envelope also includes a typescript transcript, prepared by former Museum staff. This letter is written on the verso of a folder with the Prospectus (1832) and Address (28 May 1832).

TRANSCRIPT:

---
1. Great interruption of my time - & peace of mind
2. An anxiety that ought not to be with me
3. Selling off the Prints in lots or in detail - a trouble
4. Nobody will ever pay me what they owe me
5. I never was able to get money of a printseller yet
6. I must supply the trade with property
7. I confer all the benefit - they not equally to me
8. I commit myself with faithless & low people
9. A disrepute in joining with them in trade
10. Advertizing very disagreeable - & disreputable
11. A great anxiety and disturbance of mind
12. better to pay money to be out than in a bad job
13. Consider the first loss as mostly the least
14. Not to volunteer not all the above or
15. any of it - above all consider the weight on the mind -- J.C.

I must keep the press continually at work - for the benefit of the printsellers - printing always money into their pockets and out of my own - as this
They will say - they will take 100£, worth - by which they mean 200£ worth paying only for one / if at all
To print this [t/n: ''200 prints' crossed out] it will cost me 30 percent out of this hundred pounds - leaving me 70£ only - & to be paid when & how they can -- N.B. all the printsellers are miserably poor - & few if any have any have capital at - which your property indeed supplies
This if I give 300£ for the plate - to raise it again I must spend 300£ more on it - so great will the quantity be that is required by the trade = for the sum - and in fact the plate would be worn out before it paid for itself - and besides that another expence would be ocasioned by the replenishing the plate &cc. to enable it to go on.
thus would be the case - if in my hands - and as Remuneration is hardly to be hoped - profit is hopeless.
