<value>This is a letter written from Haworth, Yorkshire, by Charlotte Brontë to Miss Margaret Wooler, dated April 23 1845. The letter is 1 leaf (bifold) and mounted in the volume. The leaf has been numbered 1 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume.

In this letter, Brontë discusses annuities on female lives and the Brontë sisters' railroad investment. She writes that her sister, Emily, is the expert on their investment being very well-read on the matter. She asks after Miss Wooler's health and discusses her school friends, Mary Taylor and Ellen Nussey. Taylor was travelling at this time and Brontë assumes 'she must by this time be far beyond Madeira'. Nussey is reported to be staying with her brother Henry Nussey in Derbyshire, in anticipation of his marriage, which has been postponed due to a death in his prospective bride's family. Brontë says 'those sort of things never seem to me secure till the knot is actually tied' however the marriage did take place in May 1845.

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 1 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1995), pp. 389-90.</value>
