It is not dated and its date is contested. The dates '? late 1846' and '[late 1852]' are given in the upper righthand corner. Professor Mildred Christian (Newcomb College, Tulane University) has argued that the tentative dating of 1846 is wrong and it should be 1852. This is stated in the typescript note of contents (Bront\u00eb(C)\/37) enclosed with the volume. However Margaret Smith dates the letter as either late November 1846 or December 1847: 'the annotations in pencil suggesting dates of late 1846 or 1852 have no authority' ('The Letters of Charlotte Bront\u00eb', Vol. 1, 1995, p. 506).\n\nThis is not the full letter but only a fragment of it. The fragment is 1 leaf and mounted in the volume. The leaf has been numbered 3 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume.  \n\nIn this letter, Bront\u00eb discusses her father's health following an eye operation and the restoration of his eyesight. She also expresses her pity for 'Mr Thomas', Margaret Wooler's younger brother (1803-1895), who has been suffering for ten years from 'nervous complaints' and 'hypochondria'. Smith notes that Bront\u00eb uses 'hypochondria' to 'mean intense depression, not necessarily accompanied by preoccupation with imaginary ailments' (p. 506). Bront\u00eb says that she suffered from the same for 'but a year' but has not been able to forget 'the concentrated anguish of certain insufferable moments' she enduring during this period. She goes on to discuss her unhappy mental state during her time as a teacher at Dewsbury Moor (Roe Head School). She writes that 'nervous patients' can become a 'weary burden' to those around them.
