<type>content description</type>
<value>This is a letter written from Haworth, Yorkshire by Charlotte Brontë to Miss Margaret Wooler, dated March 31 1848. The letter is incomplete and there is only 1 leaf. This leaf is bifold and mounted in the volume. It been numbered 4 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume.

In this letter, Brontë writes that recently 'influenza has been so severe and so generally prevalent' and that she was worried for the health of the Misses Woolers. She says that only her father, Patrick Brontë, has been spared an 'attack' of influenza however she and her sisters have suffered from it. She says that the influenza lingered longest with her sister Anne and though Anne is recovered, it 'has left her chest weak'. She goes on to discuss how her feelings about war have changed since her youth when she was interested in the Napoleanic Wars (1802-1815). She discusses some of the revolutions that were occurring in 1848, in places such as France and Germany, and the unrest in Ireland in the wake of the Irish famine. She then discusses news received from her friend Ellen Nussey.

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol 2 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2000), pp. 47-48.</value>
