<value>This is a letter written from Haworth, Yorkshire by Charlotte Brontë to Miss Margaret Wooler, dated August 28 1848. The letter is incomplete; it is is 1 leaf (bifold) and mounted in the volume. The leaf has been numbered 5 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume.

In this letter, Brontë answers Miss Wooler's query, made on behalf of Mrs. Susan Carter seeking to send her daughter there, on the Clergy Daughter's School, which Charlotte attended alongside her late elder sisters Elizabeth and Maria in 1824-25. Brontë acknowledges that the school was is in its 'infancy' when she attended and that it was a 'rickety infancy': she writes of the unhealthy conditions which included an insufficient diet for the students and the spread of various illnesses. However she acknowledges that the school is now 'entirely altered and greatly improved', its location has moved from Cowan Bridge to Casterton, and students are well provided for when they leave the school, in terms of job prospects and being given an 'excellent wardrobe'.

She goes onto discuss news of her friends Ellen Nussey and Mary Taylor, noting that Taylor's 'active, happy and joyous life' provides a sharp contrast to her 'comparatively dull, uneventful and unoccupied existence'. She discusses Mary Taylor's brother, Waring, and his marriage to Mary Knox. Finally, she discusses her reading, promising to read the 'Life of Dr. Arnold' upon Miss Wooler's recommendation, referring to 'The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold, D.D., late Head Master of Rugby School, and Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford', written by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (1844). She mentions she has been reading 'a lately published collection of the Letters of Charles Lamb'.

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 2 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2000), pp. 106-108.</value>
