<value>This is a letter written from Haworth, Yorkshire by Charlotte Brontë to Miss Margaret Wooler, dated May 16 1849. The letter is 1 leaf (bifold), written on mourning paper, and mounted in the volume. The leaf has been numbered 7 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume.

In this letter, Brontë thanks Miss Wooler for her offer of her house in North Bay, Scarborough, during her and Anne's stay in Scarborough however declines the offer as Anne, having visited Scarborough as a governess with the Robinson family, has a preference for staying in the North Bay. She writes that Anne has a 'fixed impression that the sea-air will give her a chance of regaining strength' yet Charlotte is doubtful of the efficacy of the Scarborough visit as a cure for Anne, noting that 'she is more emaciated than Emily was at the very last'.

Charlotte writes that Ellen Nussey ‘accompanies us by her own kind and friendly wish’ however there is a note on page 1 verso that ‘Anne had implored E to accompany her but C did not know it’. Above this note, Sir Clifford Allbut has attributed this note to Miss Margaret Wooler however Professor Mildred Christian (Newcomb College, Tulane University) has contested that this note was in fact written by Ellen Nussey to whom Miss Wooler loaned the letters for use in a projected edition of Charlotte Brontë's letters. This information can be found in the typescript note of contents (Brontë(C)/37) enclosed with the volume. Margaret Smith also notes that the writing 'resembles' Nussey's ('The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 2, 2000, p. 211).

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 2 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2000), pp. 210-211.</value>
