The letter is 2 leaves, both mounted in the volume and leaf 1 is folded. Leaf 1 has been numbered 9 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume. Leaf 2 is unnumbered but follows on from Leaf 1. \n\nIn this letter, Bront\u00eb is compelled to refuse Miss Wooler's invitation to join her at the Lake District having recently visited the same area in the company of Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth. She writes that she would have preferred to visit with Miss Wooler as Kay-Shuttleworth is 'not a man in whose presence one willingly unbends'. She praises the scenery of the Lake District which she writes she saw from the vantage-point of a carriage, though would have liked to wander freely herself. She writes of having to suppress her enthusiasm to avoid 'drawing attention to the \"lioness\" the authoress - the she-artist'. She writes of a recent visit to London where she has only visited Kay-Shuttleworth and her publishers, Smith, Elder and Company. She says it is not fair to leave her father who is now 75 years old and has recently been suffering from 'chronic bronchitis'.
