The month has been crossed out by Brontë and another hand has suggested '?Oct'; likely Ellen Nussey's hand (see note below). The letter is 1 leaf (bifold) and mounted in the volume. The leaf has been numbered 17 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume.

In this letter, Brontë expresses sadness that she has heard from Ellen Nussey that Miss Wooler has recently been sick with influenza. She says 'it has been very prevalent in this neighbourhood' (Haworth), that she also suffered but only for a short period and that her father 'continues pretty well'. She thanks Miss Wooler for her 'kind present' of a book that she promises will always have its 'place' upon her 'dressing table'. The book is possibly Hugh White's 'The Gospel Promotive of True Happiness' (Dublin: James McGlashan, 1851, presented to CB by ‘M.W’; Haworth Parsonage Museum, Library bb67).

She is also profusely grateful for the second part of the gift, some needed winter undergarments, that arrived just as she was pondering the need to buy and make some. Brontë writes that Ellen Nussey has been staying with her for one week; she would not allow her to stay longer due to her lack of progress with writing but that time together has done her 'inexpressible good'. Both her father and the family's domestic workers, Tabitha Aykroyd and Martha Brown, request that Miss Wooler visit them in summer or autumn but Brontë says she turns a 'deaf ear' as she wishes to be free from work before inviting Miss Wooler to Haworth. She sends a book via Ellen Nussey: 'a Scotch tale by a minister's wife'.

Amendments have been made to this letter. Professor Mildred Christian (Newcomb College, Tulane University) has stated that these notes and annotations are in Ellen Nussey's hand. This is detailed in the typescript note of contents enclosed with the volume (Brontë(C)/37).

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 3 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2004), pp. 71-72.
[{"@link":
[{"@link":
