The year has been specified by another hand. The letter is 1 leaf (bifold) and mounted in the volume. The leaf has been numbered 18 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume.  \n\nBront\u00eb writes of a recent 'tribulation' when she did not receive an expected letter and contemplated an impromptu trip to London. However on Sunday morning, she received the letter which put her 'out of pain'. This letter would have been George Smith's response to the third and final part of 'Villette'. Bront\u00eb expresses her dissatisfaction with the 'money transaction', which she writes 'is not quite equitable'. She says that her father would have expected \u00a3700 but she has received \u00a3500. It has been suggested by George Smith's biographer, Lyndall Gordon, that the reduced sum was due to Smith's negative reaction to the shift of romantic interest in 'Villette' from Dr John Graham Bretton (which he saw as modelled upon himself) to the teacher M. Paul Emanuel\n(see: Gordon, 'Passionate Life', p. 287 et seq.)\n\nShe also convey Ellen Nussey's gratitude for Miss Wooler's gift of a cambric, similar to that gifted to Bront\u00eb (discussed in Bront\u00eb(C)\/17), and promises to send on Thackeray's 'The History of Henry Esmond' to Miss Wooler 'as soon as the Haworth party has read it'. This letter contains a handwritten note contextualising Bront\u00eb's planned visit to London though confuses 'Villette' for 'Shirley'. Professor Mildred Christian (Newcomb College, Tulane University) has stated that this note is written by Ellen Nussey, as detailed in the typescript note of contents enclosed with the volume (Bront\u00eb(C)\/37).
