<value>This is a letter written from Haworth, Yorkshire by Charlotte Brontë to Miss Margaret Wooler, dated April 13 1853. The letter is 2 leaves (bifold leaf 1) mounted separately in the volume. Leaf 2 has an uneven edge where Brontë presumably halved the paper. Leaf 1 has been numbered 21 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume. Leaf 2 follows on after Leaf 1 but is unnumbered.

Brontë apologises for the delay in responding to Miss Wooler's last letter. She says that her publishers seem satisfied with the reception to 'Villette' and adds that the majority of reviews have been 'favourable enough'. She does not however that 'Currer Bell' has been criticised by some for 'remarks on Romanism', in publications such as the 'Guardian', the 'English Churchman' and 'The Christian Remembrancer'. She adds that the work has also been criticised by Harriet Martineau and that this criticism has been so 'strangely and unexpectedly acrimonious – that I have gathered courage to tell her that the gulf of mutual difference between her and me is so wide and deep – the bridge of union so slight and uncertain – I have come to the conclusion that frequent intercourse would be most perilous and unadvisable’. She has put off her visit to Martineau, who is 'very angry' and Brontë is aware that 'her bitterness will not be short-lived, but it cannot be helped'.

Mr William Wooler has been in touch regarding advice on publication however Brontë says 'in these days of headlong competition - it is a great risk to publish'. On Leaf 2, Brontë writes that she intends to visit Manchester the following week to see Mrs. Gaskell. Ellen Nussey is unlikely to visit Yarmouth and Brontë invites Miss Wooler to visit Haworth before she goes to the seaside, emphasising that such a visit would be appreciated by all in the household. As noted in the typescript note of contents enclosed with the volume (Brontë(C)/37), Sir Clifford Allbut has added a note giving a short biography of William Wooler, Miss Wooler's eldest brother, at the top of Leaf 1.

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 3 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2004), pp. 154-155.</value>
