<value>This is a letter written from Haworth, Yorkshire by Charlotte Brontë to Miss Margaret Wooler, dated December 12 1853. The letter is 1 leaf (bifold) and mounted in the volume. The leaf has been numbered 25 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume. This letter is incomplete.

Brontë writes that Miss Wooler is likely spending the 'long winter evenings' alone like herself. She contemplates the nature of Miss Wooler's solitude and how it might be perceived by others. This was written during a period when Brontë was secretly meeting with Arthur Bells Nicholls and considering his proposal of marriage. This had caused an estrangement with Ellen Nussey, who felt Brontë should remain unmarried, which Miss Wooler attempted to mediate. Brontë writes: 'Do not think that your kind wish respecting E. Nussey and myself does not touch or influence me; it does both; yet I hardly know how to take the step you recommend'. The name 'E. Nussey' has been crossed out first in pencil and then in pen by an unknown hand.

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 3 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2004), pp. 213-14.</value>
