The letter is 2 leaves (bifold leaf 1) mounted separately in the volume. Leaf 1 has been numbered 26 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume. Leaf 2 follows and has been numbered 26a in the bottom right-hand corner.

Brontë writes that due to the 'truly kind interest' Miss Wooler has always taken in her affairs, she wishes to give her 'an early communication' of the latest developments. She says that Patrick Brontë's 'mind has gradually come round to a view to that which he once took' regarding the matter of Arthur Bell Nicholls' proposal of marriage to Brontë. Nicholls is to resume his former curacy of Haworth once his replacement finds a new situation. Brontë writes of her happiness regarding her father's changed views and how he will be well-looked after as a result of the marriage. She says that she can depend on Nicholls to care for her father both 'as a duty' and 'office of affection'.

She acknowledges that others may not regard her marriage as a particularly 'brilliant' turn of fate yet she sees in it 'some germs of real happiness'. She says Nicholls wishes the wedding to take place in July though she feels this is too soon. She says she will be visiting Brookroyd soon (having reconciled with Ellen Nussey) and hopes to see Miss Wooler there to set a date for her visit to Haworth. Brontë also writes that she will not be visiting London as the upcoming three months will bring an 'abundance of occupation'. She confirms that she and Ellen are 'quite friends again - thanks in a great measure to the kind mediating word' spoken by Miss Wooler. As in Brontë(C)/25, 'Ellen' has been crossed out in pen by an unknown hand. There are also faint pencil markings on the verso side of leaf 1.

Brontë adds a postscript that runs onto Leaf 2 regarding a letter from Bishop Langley to Patrick Brontë expressing happiness over Nicholls' return to Haworth and the upcoming marriage. She writes that Langley may have guessed 'the state of things when he was here in June 1853' and as a result provided kind sympathy to Nicholls during that visit.

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 3 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2004), pp. 242-3.
[{"@link":
[{"@link":
