The letter is 1 leaf (bifold) and mounted in the volume. The leaf has been numbered 31 in the upper right-hand corner according to chronology and its order in the volume.

Brontë says she has delayed answering Miss Wooler's letter in the hope she would have a definite date when she would be visiting Brookroyd. She had scheduled her visit for the following week but now must defer it. Mr and Mrs Joe Taylor are at Scarborough due to medical advice 'in consequence of Joe's very delicate state of health'. He is suffering from ‘gastric fever, a complaint which has been strangely prevalent and often fatal’. Her father is well and indeed seems stronger in the colder weather; she notes he has often been better in the winters than the summers. She is herself is well and she has enjoyed 'comparative immunity from headache, sickness and indigestion' for the 'last three months'. Regarding married life, she says: 'My life is different from what it used to be – May God make me thankful for it! I have a good, kind, attached husband, and every day makes my attachment to him stronger’.

Sir Kay-Shuttleworth has visited, having recovered from a prior accident. Brontë is pleased that Shuttleworth was quite taken with Nicholls and even offered him 'his living of Habergham or Padiham', worth £200 per annum. This had to be declined however out of consideration to Patrick Brontë. Nicholls has promised Shuttleworth he will find a suitable alternative. Brontë sends her regards to the Carters and hopes that Miss Wooler's niece Susan will 'repay your kindness' to her. She makes a comment regarding Ellen Carter, also Miss Wooler's niece, who is abroad and 'making good discoveries ... respecting the advantages of regular employment'. Brontë adds: 'better late than never' but this has been heavily deleted.

A full edition of this letter can be found in Margaret Smith's 'The Letters of Charlotte Brontë', Vol. 3 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2004), pp. 301-2.
[{"@link":
[{"@link":
