Barrett Browning discusses Balzac, in particular 'Modeste Mignon' and says she feels her youth was very similar to what is described in that book by Balzac. She says 'Let those who have imaginative daughters, beware of that \u2018safe plan,\u2019 as it is said to be, of keeping them in seclusion\u2014let them beware of their love of solitude & habits of silence'. She says that for herself poetry has been a 'safety valve' and without it 'the disease within (we must call it a form of insanity) wd have manifested itself fantastically some day'. \n\nShe asks Miss Mitford not to think badly of her due to her frankness. She says that Charles de Bernard cannot be named alongside Balzac. She discusses Delavigne and Victor Hugo. She also acknowledges that Robert Browning has 'faults' and 'obscurities & perplexities of diction' but she believes his name will stand the test of time. She says that those 'who esteem him, are of a small circle'. \n\nShe asks whether Miss Mitford is not aware of Miss Martineau's letter published in newspapers 'to deny formally having ever given the permission in question', regarding the details of her recovery being published by her brother-in-law. She says that the Leaguers have asked her to write a poem for the grand Bazaar and asks for Miss Mitford's opinion. She says that though 'refined people' call her poetry 'mystical' it has gained popularity in Leeds. She ends by saying: 'We shall see\u2014as I say of Robert Browning\u2019s genius' In her postscript, she discusses 'Modest Mignon' once more.\n\nA transcript of this letter is available online via The Brownings' Correspondence Project, numbered 1815. It is also published in 'The Brownings' Correspondence' (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 1992), vol. 10, pp. 23-24."}]},"identifier":[{"accession_number":"GBR\/280\/MS.1.R-1917\/1\/29","primary":true,"type":"accession number","value":"GBR\/280\/MS.1.R-1917\/1\/29"},{"priref":"110010036","type":"priref","value":"110010036"},{"type":"old reference no.","value":"Browning(EB)\/25"},{"type":"old reference no.","value":"Browning(EB)\/11"},{"type":"uri","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110010036","value":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110010036"}],"institutions":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"lifecycle":{"creation":[{"date":[{"earliest":1845,"from":{"earliest":1845,"latest":1845,"value":"1845-01-20"},"latest":1845,"note":[{"value":"[20\u201321] Jan. 1845"}],"range":true,"to":{"earliest":1845,"latest":1845,"value":"1845-01-21"}}],"maker":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-164438","uid":"adlib-agent-164438","uuid":"134c98ee-69a6-3752-982b-477276489b51"},"summary_title":"Browning, Elizabeth Barrett"}]}]},"summary_title":"MS Letter, Elizabeth Barrett Browning to Mary Russell Mitford","title":[{"value":"MS Letter, Elizabeth Barrett Browning to Mary Russell Mitford"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
