<value>This letter is written from London, England. Barrett Browning begins the letter by discussing details of an upcoming visit by Miss Mitford. She goes on to discuss Balzac, whom she says is a 'man of more masterly genius he is than Scott, because profounder & less conventional'. She however criticises Balzac for 'attacking hiw own order' (the feuilletonistes), arguing that 'when writers in France attack journalism, they attack their own profession'.

She then discusses Delphine Gay, saying that Gay and Girardin are 'queens of two of the most brilliant literary salons in Paris'. She asks whether Miss Mitford is willing to 'attempt the eight volumes of Frederic Soulié[’]s Memoires du diable'. She is reading it currently and says that while 'much in it is most disgusting', Miss Mitford will 'be struck by the variety of power in it'.

A transcript of this letter is available online via The Brownings' Correspondence Project, numbered 1830. It is also published in 'The Brownings' Correspondence' (Kansas: Wedgestone Press, 1992), vol. 10, pp. 54-58.</value>
